Where Should Your Dog Be?
Keep your dog on your left side. This gives your dog a certain place to be and will eliminate their weaving back and forth in front of you.
The Collar
There is a right way and a wrong way to put a collar on your dog. See the Collar sheet.
The Leash
The correct way to hold the leash is to gather up the end with the handle in your right hand. The left hand should be Palm Down. Put your left arm at your side, just as you have it when you are walking - without your dog.
Heel Position
Heel position is with your dog's right front leg lined up with your left leg. Your command will be your dog's name and the command 'Heel'. If you are just taking your dog for a walk and not intending for them to be in 'Heel' position, give them another command such as "Let's go, or Let's walk". They should not pull even when just going for a walk.
The Correction For Pulling
The correction is a quick jerk or 'pop' backwards. Keep the correction at the Level of Your Dog's Back - Not Up.
When your dog is pulling and the leash is tight, you must do Three things At the Same Time:
|
- Lean forward
- Extend your arms forward - These two things will get slack in the leash, which you must have to get the pop correction in.
- Without hesitation, jerk straight back - at your dog's level, telling them to 'Heel'.
As soon as you have made the correction, loosen the leash so there is no pressure on the collar. Praise when your dog is where you want them.
If your dog is still pulling, make your next correction harder. Keep increasing the force of the correction until your dog responds.
Anytime you see the chain of the collar stretched out, make a correction. Be Consistent. It is confusing to the dog to correct one time and not another.
The Stay Command
Use the verbal command 'Stay', (no name), and a full palm signal in front of your dog's eyes. Pivot in front of your dog. Stay Nose to Knee until they are steady at this distance, then move back s-l-o-w-l-y. Train this exercise well for you will use it every day of your dog's life...
